Foundations of Ubuntu Linux

First and foremost, before we get into the meat of the discussion, Linux is a piece of software called a kernel that controls the hardware on your system.  It was created in the early 90' by Linus Torvalds.  Linus sought to produce a less expensive alternative to the UNIX operating system.  Linus announced back then that his kernel would be freely available under the terms of the GNU GPL.  This software license states that anyone is free to copy, redistrubute and modify as long as these conditions remain in place for everyone else.
