Linux from scratch by joysofnone
Joys of None Every distrobution has thier niche. Mandrake is intended for ease of use, Debian for the lazy power user (however, due to a horribly inefficient cdrom install, only someone with a lot of patience and bandwidth to scrap can reap the benifit), Slackware is great for customization, Redhat and Suse are corperate friendly. They all have thier extreme downside as well. Mandrake is slow and clumsey, Slackware takes a long time to set up. The only viable alternative to this hamster wheel of pain is LFS. With Linux From Scratch a user will download all the packages necessary or wanted and build them on his own machine. Since the build is to be done on a preexisting linux system, config scripts can be used. You will know exactly what is on your machine this way, have the chance to research any potential security risks, save yourself a bundle of HD space and your computer could potentially run a lot faster.
